Despite the ill-informed comments and panic, Ireland is in fact in a strong position to weather the economic storm, writes Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan TD.

The mid-year Exchequer figures published by my department confirmed what has already been widely acknowledged: our economy is facing challenging times.

The government has been discussing its response to those challenges and next week we will bring forward a plan of action to address the factors under our control....
