Peugeot's 308 takes aim at VW

Peugeot is hoping that its new 308 hatchback will rejuvenate its fortunes, writes Paul Healy.

Peugeot engineers and designers have worked hard to give the new 308 the substance to go with the characteristic French style.

France's PSA Group, made up of Peugeot and Citroen, is in trouble. It recently cut 6,000 employees from its workforce, shut down a plant just outside Paris and in February announced a record annual loss of €5 billion. The writing is seemingly on the wall for the French stalwarts, but PSA is refusing to go gently into the night.

A recent cost-sharing alliance announced with General Motors should give PSA the economies of scale to rival...
