Petroplus Holdings, the European oil company headed by Irish-American businessman Tom O’Malley, has emerged as the likely buyer of the Whitegate oil refinery in Cork.

Whitegate was put on the market last week by its owner, US oil giant Conoco Phillips, and is expected to fetch between €300 million and €380 million.
