Falling sales during the recession forced many firms to cut employee numbers, not least Commercial Hygiene Services, part of the Dublin-based cleaning company Polbrook.

Mayo-based James McDonnell had worked for Commercial Hygiene Services since 2006, as the company's sales rep with responsibility for much of the west.
