Pensions increase key to consultants' contract deal

Pensions worth up to €150,000 a year could be a key part of a new contract offer to hospital consultants due to be made by the state in the coming months.

The Sunday Business Post understands that intensive negotiations on a new contract for the consultants, with sessions two to three days a week, are likely to begin in the coming weeks, with a target of early 2007 for agreement.

The new consultants contract is likely to offer salaries of €250,000 to €300,000 a year, a substantial increase from the current level of about €180,000 a year, in return for a public only contract.
