Patients waiting for potentially life-saving gastric band surgery could have the procedure carried out in Britain under plans being advanced by doctors at St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin.

Dr Donal O'Shea, whoheads up the bariatric (weight-loss surgery) services department in St Vincent's and St Colmcille's hospitals in Dublin, said doctors had made contact with Imperial College in London, with a view to sending patients there for treatment.
