Social partnership talks enter their most critical period at Government Buildings this week with a looming deadline of Friday agreed by all the partners.

If no deal is reached the talks will be suspended until the autumn and private sector unions will begin lodging individual claims with employers.

Sources close to the talks expressed cautious hope that a formulation on pay could be reached that did not entail ‘‘capitulation’’ on either the employer or union...
