Tom Parlon, the Progressive Democrats TD for Laois-Offaly, has been the central figure in easing Michael McDowell’s passage to leadership, not least because of his considerable influence with the party membership.
Parlon, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, began a concerted membership drive after his election in 2002. His influence stretches to more than 1,000 of the 3,400 potential members in a leadership contest.
