Paper view was mostly positive

While the media has been at pains to present a balanced view of the debate, there was broad support for the treaty in Irish-owned newspapers

Writing in the Irish Daily Mail last week, Socialist Party MEP and anti-Lisbon campaigner Joe Higgins declared that the Lisbon Treaty debate this year was ‘‘profoundly undemocratic and unequal as far as much of the media is concerned’’.

Yesterday, after it became clear that the Yes side was romping home to victory, Higgins again reiterated his view that some newspapers had acted more as advocates of a Yes vote than commentators....
