Papal Resignation: Extra omnes: how the conclave will elect

Cardinals will follow strict rules for the election of Benedict's successor, writes Kieron Wood.

Within 20 days of the Pope's resignation - that is, by March 3 at the latest - the dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano, will convoke the meeting of cardinals for the papal conclave which will elect the new pope. Pope Benedict has said that he will take no part in the conclave.

There are currently 203 cardinals from 69 countries, of whom 117 are under 80 and therefore eligible to vote - including 73-year-old...
