Paolo Nutini: These Streets (Atlantic)

The little sticker on the sleeve of These Streets refers to it as an ‘‘astonishing debut album’’. On the contrary, it’s one of the least astonishing records ever made.

Nutini, a 19-year-old from Paisley in Scotland, specialises in the same kind of downbeat bedsit confessionals that have made James Blunt a wealthy man, but his voice is a bluesy rasp that stands several levels above Blunt’s horrid caterwauling.
