With its magnificent formal gardens and sprawling acreage, Lisselan Estate in Clonakilty is the proverbial mansion on the hill, writes Danielle Ryan The enchanting Lisselan Estate in Clonakilty in West Cork is a chimerical vision, set atop a plateau overlooking stunning formal gardens and the Argideen River.
The mansion was designed in a simplified French Chateau style by English architect Lewis Vulliamy and built for anglo-Irish agriculturist William Bence-Jones between 1851 and 1853.
