Nineteenth-century painted country furniture is well represented at Christie’s Interiors sale on February 20. Pride of place must go to an Irish, red-painted, pine coop-dresser (€1,600-€2,300).

This has iron cup hooks, balustrade plate racks and cutout shamrocks enclosing compartments for the roosting of chickens. A catalogue note informs us that in the late 17th and early 18th century the practice of keeping hens in Irish kitchens was widely accepted.
