OPINION: Decrease the tax take? Let them eat soap

The Taoiseach wants to cut taxes for the very people who can afford them. Meanwhile, schoolchildren must bring soap to school, writes Fiona Ness.

Somebody should tell Angela Merkel. The Germans might not be in control of our finances any more, but the chancellor would certainly take an interest in the proposed budget cut in our top tax rate, when she hears our schoolchildren are going without soap. Yes, soap. And paper towels. And - luxury of luxuries - hot water with which to wash their hands.

Because the schools were barely back a wet weekend when the senior...
