A vase from the Far East, which dates from the 15th century leads the way at Sheppard’s sale this week

A blue Chinese vase, believed to date from the 15th century (€80,000-€100,000)

At Sheppard’s this week, a Chinese blue and white vase catalogued as Bianhu (meaning transformation, as in caterpillar to butterfly) is expected to fetch €80,000-€100,000.

By the 18th century, western demand for Chinese blue and porcelain was so great, the quality of export ware was not always equal to that made for domestic use. For the finest quality, the collector has to step back in time.
