Joe Meade, the Financial Services Ombudsman, will this week express his dissatisfaction with the amount of money Irish Nationwide has refunded to customers who were overcharged by the building society.

Meade’s intervention is likely to renew the controversy about the manner in which Irish Nationwide treated its customers under the stewardship of chief executive Michael Fingleton and raise further questions about whether the Financial Regulator adequately protected consumers.
