The first drilling for oil in south Darfur in Sudan starts this week. Despite the unravelling of the latest ceasefire agreement between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebels, the stalling of Sudanese peace negotiations in Nigeria and the death of aid workers at the hands of suspected Sudanese rebels, the oil companies hope that the prospect of oil wealth will help end the new civil war in western Sudan.
