The recent furore over revelations of mistreatment of children in creches in this country shows that we still have a long way to go in regards to childcare.

We, as parents, could demand of creches that all childcare workers have decent qualifications, and then accept the need to pay them more.

RTE's Prime Time programme last Tuesday night, showing mistreatment of children in some creches, shocked many people. The footage showed children being treated roughly, strapped into chairs for too long and shouted at. Even the Minister for Children said it amounted to emotional abuse.

Call me cynical, but my own reaction has been a little more resigned. Distressing as the material was, it also struck me as sadly predictable.
