The death of an 89-year-old Englishwoman at a Swiss euthanasia clinic last week raised one of the most troubling questions facing the older generation.

Two very sad deaths were reported last week. The more obviously tragic was that of Peaches Geldof, the beautiful, fragile-looking daughter of Bob Geldof and Paula Yates, who was found dead at her home at the age of just 25.

The other struck me as no less miserable, although the 89-year-old woman who died was approaching the end of her life. The woman, a retired English art teacher identified only as Anne, was quoted as saying...
