While it may be impossible to reach a consensus on abortion, the current debate is ugly and unkind to women who find themselves in difficult circumstances, writes Catherine O'Mahony.
If there was ever an issue that made me want to cover my eyes, block my ears and scream until it goes away, it is abortion. On this issue, and on this alone, I have some sympathy for politicians faced with the task of legislating for the very thing on which it appears entirely impossible to arrive at a consensus view: the circumstances in which it is acceptable to end the life of a foetus.
