Denis O’Brien’s sudden departure from the board of Bank of Ireland has prompted much speculation about the possible motivation for his move.

O’Brien was a director of the bank since 2000 and was reported to be delighted with his elevation to the post of deputy governor last year. Then last week, less than a year later, he announced his decision to step down from the post.
