Denis O'Brien, the billionaire businessman, has called for more creative thinking to help solve Ireland's mortgage crisis, suggesting people trapped in negative equity should be given more time to resolve their difficulties.

O'Brien said he had a lot of sympathy for people who financially over-extended themselves in the boom.

He said Ireland needed to be more creative when it came to dealing with personal debts and personal guarantees.
