A scandalous footnote to history is this fine 1831 marble bust of Augustus FitzClarence, the unassuming vicar of Mapledurham in Oxfordshire from 1829 to 1854, but in fact the illegitimate son of Prince William, Duke of Clarence, later William IV, and his Irish mistress, the celebrated actress Dorothea Jordan. No fly-by-night romance, their liaison lasted 20 years and produced ten children, all of whom took the surname FitzClarence.
