A victory for Barack Obama in the US presidential election would be likely to signal a return to Clinton-era personnel in charge of the Irish issue.

Obama himself is familiar enough with the Irish peace process to have discussed it with a certain degree of knowledge last St Patrick’s Day. However, he would not be considered to be at the Clinton level of sophistication when the latter took office in 1992.
