That’s exactly what happened in Washington last week, as negotiations on raising the US debt ceiling continued to make agonisingly slow progress.

Last Thursday, the Democratic leader in the Senate, Harry Reid of Nevada, announced that the chamber would not, as had previously been planned, go into recess this week.
