The takeover of O2 by rival mobile phone operator 3 Mobile could lead to price increases for Irish customers, it has been warned.

The European Union’s failure to stoke competition when 3 Mobile parent Hutchison Whampoa bought a rival Austrian unit should be a warning for EU probes into other telecommunications deals by Hutchison and O2 parent Telefonica, said the head of the nation’s antitrust authority.
