Is there a future for subscription-based Irish news websites?

The figures from Ireland.com make for slightly gloomy reading on that score. According to a recent interview with Irish Times editor Geraldine Kennedy on RTE Radio's Marian Finucane show, Ireland.com has fewer than 10,000 paying subscribers.

Even this modest figure was inflated by foreign subscriptions, she said. Kennedy also said that the site was struggling to break even.
