Number of stations go against O’Brien firm

Denis O’Brien’s radio company, Communicorp, which controls Newstalk and 98FM in Dublin, was unsuccessful in its last bid for a new licence, partly because of the large number of stations it owns.

The board of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) decided that awarding a youth station licence for the north-west to the Communicorp-backed Spin ‘‘would not offer as great a level of diversity’’ in radio ownership.
