The Department of Justice has no plans to cut back the Garda presence at the Shell gas project in north Mayo, where the security operation has now cost more than €10 million.

Garda numbers were boosted to up to 80 a day last week to deal with protests against the start of offshore pipe-laying by Shell.

There are now estimates that the Garda bill could top €20 million by Christmas as protests continue.
