The Department of Finance has asked the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) to examine how the health service can better manage the €12 billion budget it receives from the exchequer each year.

A former director of the NTMA visited the Health Service Executive (HSE) in recent weeks to find ways of managing its cash more efficiently.
