Northern Rock customers withdraw stg£1 billion

Customers of Northern Rock in Britain and Ireland are estimated to have withdrawn about stg£1 billion (€1.4 billion) from the troubled bank last Friday.

Customers of Northern Rock in Britain and Ireland are estimated to have withdrawn about stg£1 billion (€1.4 billion) from the troubled bank last Friday.

Further withdrawals were made yesterday as Northern Rock branches remained open to facilitate customers who wanted to take their money out. The stg£1 billion estimate for withdrawals last Friday is equal to 4 per cent of the bank’s total deposits.
