As an avid independent traveller, I always dreaded the day when I would discern myself too old to fit in with the backpacking brigade. So when that day finally dawned, I found myself facing into a holiday void. Surely, I thought, there has to be something in between surrendering my rucksack, and becoming a signed up member of the cruising classes?

And as it transpires, there is. Not a cruise ship, but a working ship...
