When the developers of the BrookLodge hotel in Wicklow started work on the project ten years ago, they would visit the site every Sunday to view progress.

Each week, the security guard on the site gave the three Doyle brothers a similar message: ‘‘Nobody passed by today’’, or ‘‘Only three cars passed today’’. Adecade on, and with the economic boom come and gone, the roads around the Doyle’s Macreddin Village complex aren’t much busier, but...
