'No quick fix', says watchdog as rents keep rising

RTB director Rosalind Carroll said that while the annual pace of rental growth had slowed, the continued growth levels over consecutive quarters were 'not sustainable'

In its latest rent index, the board suggested that more people were moving into the rental sector due to affordability issues in the housing market, pushing up rents.

The national average monthly rent was €1,202, up 7 per cent from the same period last year. While the annual rate of growth slowed from 7.9 per cent in the first quarter, the quarterly increase of 3 per cent was faster than the 1.8 per cent rise recorded during Q1.
