The taxpayer will have been spared €9 million when the Irish presidency of the EU concludes today.

The Irish presidency finished up on an embarrassing note with revelations on the Anglo tapes overshadowing Taoiseach Enda Kenny's last meeting chairing the EU presidency.

But at least the exchequer coffers will have a surplus after Ireland's six-month term, with the €60 million projected cost reduced to €51 million.
