No allowances spared from Lenihan’s public sector pay cuts

All public sector allowances, overtime and top-up payments are to be cut under the budget measures aimed at reducing the public sector pay bill.

Although Brian Lenihan’s budget speech referred to the public sector pay cuts as affecting ‘‘salary’’, and legislation refers to ‘‘basic salary’’, an explanatory memorandum makes clear that all other payments to public servants are included in the cuts.
