Nightclubs fight back

The nightclub industry has been suffering from multiple whammies – first the smoking ban, then restrictive opening hours – and now the recession, writes Nicola Cooke

It’s been a tough year for the pub and nightclub industry, with the downturn in the economy leading to many high-profile casualties such as the Thomas Read Group and Renards nightclub in Dublin.

Restrictive liquor laws passed by the government last year, to curb increasing public order problems, have also had a major effect on the sector, according to those working in it.
