Michael Cawley - who last week announced he was stepping down as both deputy chief executive and chief operating officer of Ryanair - has played a huge role in its success.

Michael O'Leary once strode into a results briefing and explained the absence of his two right-hand men in typically colourful fashion.

"I'm here with Howard Miller and Michael Cawley, our two deputy chief executives. But they're presently making love in the gentlemen's toilets, such is their excitement at today's results," said the Ryanair boss.
