The top stories at lunchtime on Wednesday:

* The rate of unemployment fell to 14.2 per cent in January from 14.3 per cent in the previous month, figures from the Central Statistics Office showed today.

* Public expenditure minister Brendan Howlin said he’s got “flexibility” to hire as many as 3,000 people this year to fill critical public-sector roles as the Government expects as many as 9,000 people to leave the service this year.
