The 2 per cent Vat increase which takes effect at midnight tonight will further depress consumer sentiment at a time when the domestic economy is at its weakest point, according to Fianna Fáil finance spokesman Michael McGrath.
He said that the government's decision to raise the standard rate of Vat by 2 per cent to 23 per cent was a major policy mistake that would hit all sectors of the economy adversely, including exports.
