The new head of the Vatican's doctrinal watchdog, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), is the great-grandson of Irish emigrants to the United States.

Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco will be the most powerful man in the Catholic Church after Benedict XVI, who was head of the CDF for 24 years until being elected pope last month.

Levada, 68, is a fourth-generation Californian, whose great-grandparents emigrated to the San Francisco Bay area...
