New town promised for quake victims
Promise of multi-billion euro reconstruction will put pressure on Berlusconi’s government
The Italian government has pledged to build a ‘‘new town’’ within two years for the people who lost their homes in the earthquake that killed almost 300 people last Monday.
Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi said the reconstruction - which will take place amid a severe recession in the country - would cost ‘‘billions’’. It will be a test for Berlusconi’s government, whose term ends in 2013.
