The planned changes in how tourism is promoted acknowledge that Ireland has already fallen behind a target set two years ago of attracting ten million visitors a year by 2012.
There were 6.4million overseas visitors to Ireland in 2004, meaning a 56 per cent increase in visitors is needed to meet the 2012 target. That target is well ahead of the 28 per cent increase in visitors in the eight-year period between 1997 and 2004.
