The Department of the Environment will shortly begin examining how to cut the budgets of local authorities after widespread non-payment of the household charge.

Grants to local authorities from central government which were budgeted to reach €651 million this year will be reduced by the amount of non-payment of the tax, currently nearly €80 million.
