Fresh concern has been raised over Ireland's foster care system, with evidence emerging that 630 foster carers have not been approved by the state's foster care panel.

Some 631 foster carers had yet to be vetted, despite looking after vulnerable children, according to information compiled by the Department of Children. That equates to almost 20 per cent of all Irish foster carers.
