New discards deal will "transform" EU fishing industry - Coveney

Agriculture and fisheries minister Simon Coveney has said that a new agreement on fish discards will “transform the way in which the European catches fish.”

“The idea that we would be throwing dead fish into the sea that is perfectly edible and perfectly marketable makes no sense," said Minister Simon Coveney.

Coveney, who chaired the 21 hour long marathon talks, said the deal is a fundamental change for the fishing industry and that it will need financial assistance from Europe to deal with it.
