Controversial new guidelines on pupil barristers, which will come into force next October, were reconsidered at a special meeting of the Bar Council last weekend.

All newly-qualified barristers must ‘‘devil’’ for one year with an experienced junior counsel, known as a ‘‘master’’, before being allowed to practise on their own. Most masters make a contribution to their devils’ expenses, but there have been complaints about masters who pay their devils nothing for the whole year....
