New car sales down in Europe

Sales of new cars across Europe declined in February, according to the ACEA, the European Automobile Constructors Association.

The total, for 27 states (including Switzerland and Iceland, but not Malta and Cyprus) came to 1,083,811 vehicles, a decline of 2.5 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Of the big five markets, only Italy showed an increase, up 5.7 per cent. Germany showed a substantial decline of 14.1 per cent.

Sales in Spain were back by 4 .4 per cent; Britain by 3.2 per cent and France by1.8 per cent.
