New car licences rose 29% in December

For 2012 as a whole, the top car marque was Volkswagen (9,782) followed by Toyota (9,414), Ford (8,014) and Nissan (5,802).

For 2012 as a whole, the top car marque was Volkswagen (9,782) followed by Toyota (9,414), Ford (8,014) and Nissan (5,802).

A total of 774 new private cars were licensed in December 2012, up 29.6 per cent from the same month in 2011, even though the number of car licences for the full year fell 12.3 per cent.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed in December 2012 was 238 compared with 292 in December 2011 - a decrease of 18.5 per cent, new Central Statistics Office figures show

Overall, the number of new vehicles licensed increased by 10 per cent to 1,174.
