Hundreds of couples completing foreign adoptions will be left in limbo after the new Adoption Bill becomes law.

Ratification of the bill means that the Hague Convention’s provisions on intercountry adoption will be incorporated into Irish legislation.

Adoptions will only be allowed from countries compliant with the Hague Convention or with those that have signed bilateral agreements with Ireland. There are no such agreements now in place.
